New Delhi: As promised, the central government is now embroiled in tensions over the payment of goods and services tax (GST) to states.  Four opposition leaders protested in parliament on Thursday.  They were seen holding banners and plates.  The protest lasted for about 15 minutes.  It was attended by Akhilesh Yadav, Supriya Sule, Manoj Jha, Sanjay Singh, Darek and Brian.  The Congress did not appear to be involved in the protest.  The central government has demanded the payment of GST compensation.  The protest was attended by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Dravid Munetra Kazagham (DMK), the Samajwadi Party (SJP), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiva.  Such protests appear to have taken place before the issue of GST was discussed in the Rajya Sabha.  At a meeting of the GST council on August 27, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman said that Rs 3 lakh crore would be spent on GST this year.  He described it as a "miracle" that the economy would collapse.
