Informing in a webinar on the occasion of Prostate Awareness Month, Dr.  "Most patients with BPH are normal," Mohapatra said.  They quietly tolerate these symptoms and take various options to deal with them until their health deteriorates.  But it can be fatal if left untreated.  Problems such as recurrent acute urinary retention (sudden painful inability to urinate), recurrent urinary tract infections, stones, and even kidney failure or failure can occur.  In most cases, the problem persists even after surgery.  As a result, patients may have to undergo lifelong catheterization or dialysis.  BPH is diagnosed by physical symptoms or radiographic tests and some lab tests.  However, BPH can be improved by adopting a healthy lifestyle and habits and taking fewer medications.  "If the symptoms are uncontrolled or the health is critical, the prostate gland should be removed by surgery," he said.  Said Mohapatra.
