Karthik has resigned as captain of Kolkata. Morgan will lead KKR in the match against Mumbai
Kolkata captain Dinesh Karthik has made the big decision after losing by a wide margin against Bangalore. Karthik has decided to step down as captain of the Kolkata team, while Ian Morgan, the England team's world-winning captain and explosive batsman, has been given the responsibility by the team management. Morgan will take on Kolkata as captain in the match against Mumbai today. Morgan was previously the vice-captain of Kolkata.
Kolkata are still fourth in the points table with 4 wins from 7 matches. Despite this, Karthik’s captaincy has been the subject of constant discussion. In the midst of all this, Karthik has decided to step down as captain. He said the decision was made to focus more on batting. Team management also respected Karthik’s decision, saying, “I was surprised by Karthik’s decision. It takes courage to make such a decision. Prior to this, Karthik has led the Kolkata team in 39 matches between 2018 to 2020. Of these, KKR has won 19 and lost 17 matches. There is one match tie.
Since the formation of the Kolkata team in the IPL, there have been five captains. Morgan will lead the team as the sixth captain. Earlier, Sourav Ganguly, Brendon McCullum, Gautam Gambhir, Jack Kalis and Dinesh Karthik led the team. The team has given Ian Morgan the nod from half of the current IPL. The Kolkata Knight Riders, who have been playing in the IPL since 2008, have also won the title twice. Kolkata is aiming to win the team title again by giving Morgan the nod.
